Digital Audio Distribution Amplifier With Multiple Outputs

The RB-DDA22 is a digital audio distribution amplifier with multiple inputs and outputs. It accepts one of five different digital input formats and provides 22 outputs across five different connector types. The unit is used for distributing digital audio data in multiple formats, repeating both the audio and the input status information while re-clocking the data and normalising it to the appropriate standard digital audio levels.

Input Signals:

1 x XLR 3 female AES/EBU digital audio input

1 x BNC AES-3id digital audio input

1 x RJ45 AES/EBU digital audio input

1 x RCA Phono S/PDIF input

1 x TOSLink digital audio optical input

Output Signals:

6 x XLR-3 male AES/EBU digital audio outputs

6 x BNC AES-3id digital audio outputs

6 x RJ45 AES/EBU digital audio outputs

2 x RCA Phono S/PDIF outputs

2 x TOSLink optical outputs

The RJ45 connectors are wired to be StudioHub+™ compatible, a format defined by Radio Systems Inc. Applications include distributing audio from a digital mixing desk to multiple digital recorders, or feeding multiple studios from a USB audio player. The unit accepts input sample rates from 30 kHz to 200 kHz and bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits, making it suitable for signal distribution at 16-bit 44.1 kHz, as well as high-quality 24-bit 96 kHz or 192 kHz recordings.

The front panel includes a central INPUT SELECT button and seven indicator LEDs. The button is used to select the active input and to show the mode of operation. The LEDs indicate, depending on the mode, the selected input, valid signal presence, or the operational frequency.

Operating Mode:

In Operating Mode, the central button LED is unlit. The unit enters this mode automatically when a valid input signal has been present and no button presses have occurred for eight seconds. The surrounding LEDs illuminate amber to indicate frequencies of 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192 kHz. For non-standard input frequencies, the unit illuminates the LEDs corresponding to the nearest lower and higher standard frequencies—for example, a 64 kHz input will light both the 48 kHz and 88.2 kHz LEDs. If the frequency is below 32 kHz or above 192 kHz, the corresponding LED flashes.

Input Select Mode:

Pressing the INPUT SELECT button illuminates it red and allows the user to select the desired input. Each press steps to the next input selection, including Auto Mode. In Input Select Mode, the LEDs indicate:

  • Off – Signal not selected and no valid signal present

  • Green – Signal not selected but valid signal present

  • Red – Signal selected but no valid signal present

  • Amber – Signal selected and valid signal present, or Auto Mode selected

Input Select Mode is also automatically chosen if the previously selected input is no longer present.

Auto Select Mode:

In Auto Select Mode, the unit cycles through all inputs until it finds a valid signal. If multiple signals are present, pressing and holding the INPUT SELECT button for two seconds will force the unit to select the next valid input.
