Hospital Radio Bedside (HRB) is based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset, UK, and has been on air since 1972. It broadcasts 24 hours a day to 5 local hospitals (the Royal Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Wimborne Maternity and Poole Maternity Hospitals) and on-line at www.hospitalradiobedside.co.uk.
Simon Davies, engineer at HRB, has recently undertaken to refurbish both of their on-air studios. He has replaced the mixers with Sonifex S2 split mixers and has included a variety of other items such as the Sonifex SignalLED studio signs and a Sonifex RB-SS10 10 way stereo analogue source selector/mixer to interface with their play-out system to enable automated news.
Simon wanted a specific desk design and layout. He wanted to replace the studios’ main work surface and pods and in order to achieve a low profile with good visibility of guests and room for computer monitors he choose to have no meterbridges on the S2 mixers. Instead he sought a custom furniture design from Sonifex supplier Westcountry Broadcast who furnished the studio in a mahogany finish suite with matching mahogany meterbridge pods. The meterbridges were located between the mixer sections with the computer monitors behind the mixer chassis.
Simon Davies said: “We chose the Sonifex S2 because of the clean and simple layout. When you have to train nearly 50 volunteers on how to use the studios, you have to make it as easy as possible. But at the same time have enough flexibility in the desk for more advanced operation.”
Nick Beer, Managing Director at Westcountry Broadcast commented: “Simon had very precise ideas as to how he wanted the finished product to look. He was happy with his choice of the S2 but wanted us to supply this with everything he needed to achieve the desired end result. We enjoyed producing a design for the station in what is an unusual style and Simon’s finished installation looks absolutely great”.
